Don’t you find it weird that the “fix” that is being proposed is only changing the UI? In a sense, we’re still trusting the front-end while unescaped HTML is still being stored in the database.

I just checked validation.rs (line 132) too and you’re right!

I do hope those apps share at least a small part of their revenue by donating to the Lemmy devs (will be tricky to decide which instances to also donate to though). The app devs should realize that the success of their app business depends on Lemmy still being alive.

Yes that confirms that it’s hosted in his home, which means likely a dynamic IP address and explains why the domain name is pointing to dynu.com. I think the good news here is that he still has the domain name, it’s just his server that is probably down.

When I was still making personal websites ~10 years ago there were quite a few hobbyists who were providing free hosting on relatively big servers and I do remember they had dynamic IP addresses as they had the servers running in their homes and it was a bit painful to setup a domain name back then and you needed a dynamic DNS provider. So probably the fact that it’s redirecting to a dynu.com page is a good sign.

The API is returning the correct error. The UI however simply displays a spinning wheel without any error message and you’re left wondering if the instance has any issues. That is a bug.

it’s running the 0.18.0 version which has some SQL problems that were fixed in recent 0.18.1 rc’s

Not a good one IMO. I don’t obviously think it will get deleted but I think that writing that on c/Technology or c/Lemmy and then complain that it gets deleted would be just a dishonest bait, because it is off-topic and should IMO get deleted from those subs, I at least would delete it and I’m as capitalistic as it gets.

A better test would be to post it on a more general or politics sub and wait and see.

FYI you can block a community. And I’m not a fan of echo-chambers. Whether you like Donald or not, I believe that as long as the content is not illegal, users should just block that community if they don’t wish to see or amplify their posts. You’re merely reinforcing their belief that they’re being “persecuted” on the internet.

Captchas are not available in this version, as they need to be reimplemented in a different way. They will be back in 0.18.1, so wait with upgrading if you rely on them.

What the hell? Another bad default where newbies will continue to launch instances attracting 10k+ bot signups per day and new users will keep getting disgusted by Lemmy if they land on one of those spammy instances. Making captchas a default should have been a priority and I’m sure no one would have complained if the 0.18 release was postponed to make that happen.

Email verification + captcha should be enough. The application part is cringe and a bad idea, unless you really want to be your own small high school clique and don’t have any growth ambitions, which is perfectly fine but again should not be expected from general instances looking to welcome Redditors.
