Correct me if I’m wrong but you can select multiple viewing languages. It’s just slightly unintuitive in lemmy-ui: hold either CTRL or SHIFT (I forgot, apologies) while you select languages in your profile settings.
The default posting language/allowed languages are decided on community level by mods.
Edit: didn’t want to just say unintuitive without offering an alternative, so: visible checkboxes would maybe be more intuitive?
I had a look and determined I need bit more time for this all than just today (long work day and a lot of additional info + need to get into lemmy-ui codebase a bit).
You’ve got some good points there, thank you! I’m not a UI or UX expert but it’s a bit of a challenge reducing the amount of clicks and still keeping it mobile friendly without creating a screen full of options with several scrolls needed to reach the actual search, but I agree the goal should be less-actions.
I think once I have a bit of a grasp on the project I’ll try and submit my suggestion.

I’ll hopefully manage to set up lemmy-ui locally at home after work and make that pull request - I edited that in with webdev tools since didn’t want to lose that thought before I get home (sorry if this just pollutes the discussion).
Yeah there’s a lot to consider here, good points. The language specific texts too to make it more search selection context based. This would need to be thought through to not make it more confusing.
I’m not a UI or UX expert, but I wonder if it would make the search page nicer if instead of the search target (form select) would be tabs instead of a dropdown since it is distinct selection from the other filters in the search?

True, and also it will make it feel less like “lemmy is dead” to new comers (something we have heard time and time again from people who are new to the fediverse) because they accidentally found the one community that was dead. It’s easier to point them to “our version” of a community they are looking for.
Even in moderately popular communities the posting frequency is quite low compared to what some people are used to. For me personally I actually like the activity level of lemmy, but we need more people to account for comings and goings of users to be able to sustain communities on the long run.
I’ve had this discussion before and the conclusion was:
Keep it as general as possible. Lemmy is still growing and small and a niche community looks often dead.
Once the community becomes too big it’s easier to split the community into more specific communities.
For example: we have quite a few communities about learning a specific language and they all seem inactive, so we are keeping a general community up (!languagelearning@sopuli.xyz) but don’t limit the content to anything specific. You can ask generally about languages, learning, or a specific language and you are more likely to get an answer from others than if you go to a language specific community.
Once it’s too big it will be easy for an active group of people to move to, say, !japaneselanguage@sopuli.xyz or something.
So, in short: start with a general community :)

Ahh sorry now I get it, settings inside posts! I have to admit I have no idea how those work, I suspected that the language options you have inside a post are community specific settings that mods of a community control, or maybe they only offer undetermined and the language the post was made with? Hope someone who knows gives an answer!
Sorry not sure if I’m understanding your comment, but you already can multi select languages, the way I stated in the comment above: in the web UI go to your profile settings and hold CTRL to select another language you wish to see. You can choose as many languages as you want while holding CTRL.
I had that too. Was wondering why I don’t see posts in a community while logged in (I thought selecting only “undetermined” in your account settings shows you posts and comments of all languages), but someone told me you can select multiple languages in your profile by holding CTRL and selecting more languages. Suddenly started seeing MUCH more content.
Would love if this was developed further, for example actually making “undetermined” show all languages.
